FSMA 204 Compliance
Food Safety Modernization Act Rule 204 (FSMA 204) requires that every piece of the supply chain that holds food on the Food Traceability List (FTL) (see FDA FTL) must retain Critical Tracking Events (CTEs) and Key Data Elements (KDEs) and be able to provide a sortable spreadsheet of this data to the FDA within 24 hours of the request. This law will be enforced beginning Jan 20th, 2026. Routine FDA audits will begin in 2027. In order for everyone in the supply chain to meet this requirement, Shipping KDEs must be shared with trading partners. To meet this need, industry collaboration and teamwork is critical. This includes suppliers. Which is why we are building Highland Traceable.

Building for Suppliers
Suppliers have many customers. These customers are all approaching FSMA 204 in various ways (e.g. differing traceability solutions and stricter requirements). Which means suppliers have to manage multiple ways of sharing shipping KDEs with their customers. Further, suppliers need to be able to quickly adapt to the regular dynamic change of the food industry (e.g. consolidation and new business). Suppliers should not need to worry about data sharing requirements as they manage and grow their business. They must maintain market access with current customers while establishing new prospects. Highland Traceable gives them the tool to navigate this new frontier by integrating with their ERP and automating data sharing. Have a Highland Hub account? Suppliers can bring in their sites and blocks to have a single place to manage their traceability plan.

Assist ERP’s
Supply-side ERPs and 3rd party IT organizations have enough on their plate. These companies run lean in order to provide affordable services to their customers. They typically maintain a healthy engineering backlog to support current suppliers and build new features to win prospects. They need a solution to come alongside and help their customers manage FSMA 204 compliance. Highland Traceable builds turn-key ERP integrations to automate data sharing requirements for their suppliers and plan smart for future change.

Support the Network
The key to FSMA Rule 204 is industry collaboration. This should include the supply side. Though suppliers are already being informed what they should do. They are not being engaged in a meaningful way to do it efficiently. Additionally, suppliers and their ERPs are skeptical of the success of FSMA 204 and bring unique insights that have not been heard. As a supply-centric solution, Highland Traceable works through these barriers and automatically shares shipping KDEs with other traceability solutions in the format they require it. The current landscape of traceability solutions is vast and we don’t take jumping into the fray lightly. Right or wrong, we believe a supply emphasis is a missing component in order to support the traceability network.

Enable Traceability
Highland has its roots in the supply-side of the food industry. We dedicate ourselves to farmers, packers, and shippers by asking the right questions and always listening. Additionally, we have proven expertise in ERP data capture, management, and processing. We know the supply side data hurdles that must be overcome for the success of the traceability initiative. By approaching FSMA 204 from this perspective, we are helping to enable traceability for the whole industry.
